Practice Newsletter February 2012

Hello and Happy New Year from all of us at Eachway Dental Practice. I trust the New Years Resolutions are going well and you have quit chocolate and wine at least for the month of January. Yeah, we haven’t either!

This Annual Newsletter is designed to keep you up to date with developments within our practice and in the field of Dentistry. In this edition we will focus on toothbrushing technique –this is well worth a read even if you think yours is perfect.

We are very lucky to have such experienced and devoted staff, all of whom are qualified and been with us for quite some time.

Some of you will already know about our new system for recalling you when your check up is due. Since August we have been contacting you either by text or email. Research shows that most people prefer these methods of contact and are more likely to attend their appointments. It is also an environmentally friendly way of sending for you as it uses no paper. So please let us know your preferred method. Of course, if you prefer, or don’t have an email address or mobile phone we can still send your appointment by post. When you are next in, just inform Donna or whoever is on reception of your preferred method and check that we have up to date details for you.

We can also send out occasional texts and emails to keep you informed of practice developments. These will typically be our practice newsletter, an invitation to our open night or opening times over holiday periods.

Did you know that we now have a practice website and a facebook and twitter account? www.eachwaydentalpractice.co.uk . Please have a look. If you have any comments about the service you have received then please email or write to us. We are always looking for new testimonials to put on our website, facebook and twitter. Equally, if they are negative we want to know so that we can improve our service to you.

In other news Judith has been busy doing a Dental Photography course. Dental photographs are an excellent way for us to document your mouth before and after treatment so you can see the real results. It is also invaluable when doing facial aesthetics and clients are delighted with the results achieved.

We now offer a range of facial aesthetic treatments including wrinkle relaxing injections and dermal fillers. This area is developing very quickly due to continual research and medical testing. Botox ™ is already used in the treatment of headaches and tooth grinding as well as a cosmetic treatment. It may even be useful in treating hayfever in the future. Wrinkle relaxing injections and dermal fillers are commonly used to smooth facial lines and enhance the facial contours and shape of the lips. The effects last for up to a year. To compliment the aesthetics range we hope to soon be offering facial treatments using the infamous Obagi range. This is a range of ‘cosmeceuticals’ which can only be used by healthcare professionals and they really help skin tone, pores and age spots. Ask us for details- we hope to be completing the course soon.

Our Open Evening will be on Tuesday 12th March this year. Please put the date in your diary and let us know that you are coming-bring friends too if you like. It is always a lovely evening, where we are here for an informal chat with a glass of bubbly and nibbles. You can have a complimentary nail paint and massage and watch us demonstrate some of our recent techniques in facial aesthetics and answer any questions you might have. Our previous open evenings have been really well received. The spaces are limited due to the size of our premises so please book early to avoid disappointment. Just call or email Donna on reception to confirm places. We always get great goodie bags for you to take home on the night as well as discounts for any treatments booked on the evening!

This year the charity we are supporting is Bridge 2 Aid. Almost three quarters of the world population have no access to the most simple dental pain relief, leaving billions to face daily battle with pain in the toughest of life circumstances.

Bridge 2 Aid is working to address this problem by providing access to dental pain relief for the millions suffering in the developing world. Focussing on empowering the local people, Bridge 2 Aid trains local health workers in emergency dentistry so they can treat tens of thousands of people including those in rural areas. They have centres in Tanzania and hope to extend to other areas this year. Please help us to support them by giving generously. We hope at some point to send a few of our staff over to aid with training.

Our feature this newsletter is on toothbrushing. Read on!

If using an electric toothbrush;

Spread the toothpaste around your teeth before switching it on. We recommend sonicare toothbrushes, but other brands such as Oral B are effective too. Spend 2 minutes twice a day brushing- morning and evening. Start in 1 corner of your mouth and angle the bristle tips towards your gums at a 45 degree angle so that they can clean under your gums too. Slowly work your way around all of your teeth. We recommend doing the outsides, then the insides and lastly, the biting/chewing surfaces. No need to scrub as the electric toothbrush will do the work. Watch the sonicare in action online at www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYlzQKGWPuQ

If using a manual toothbrush, choose one with soft bristles and a small head.

Place the head of the toothbrush against your teeth and tilt the bristle tips to 45 degrees against the gum line. Move the brush in circular movements several times on all surfaces of every tooth.

Use the same method on the inside of all your teeth, then brush the chewing surfaces. To clean the inside of the front teeth tilt the brush vertically and make several small circular strokes with the brush. Brush the tongue to freshen your breath. Watch a video online here

We also recommend flossing or using ID brushes once a day. If you wish, then use a mouthwash after meals, when brushing isn’t recommended as enamel may be softer after eating and drinking.

Aim to replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every 3 months.

Remember we are YOUR practice and YOUR dentist and we really value your feedback. Please share us with your family and friends. We take your referrals as a great personal compliment and an affirmation that you feel secure and comfortable with our team. We also know that this means you have entrusted us with the care of your family, friends and colleagues.

Yours in good dental health,
Judith, Hari and The Team

Practice Newsletter October 2011

Hello and welcome to our practice newsletter. We have designed this to keep you up to date on developments within our practice and in the field of dentistry. This newsletter will focus on the link between gum disease and systemic diseases and toothbrushing.
We are very lucky to have such experienced and devoted staff. Mel and Donna have been with the practice for 20 years now and Jayne for 8 years! Congratulations to Joy who has completed her Dental Nursing Qualification this summer. She has worked hard and got excellent results.
Donna has just completed her NVQ level 3 in customer services.
Following the demand for wrinkle relaxing injections Judith has gone on to complete the course in dermal fillers. These are commonly used to smooth facial lines and enhance the facial contours and shape of the lips. The effects last for up to a year. We use Juvederm and Emerval, which are the market leaders in dermal fillers.
We are currently running a special offer with 10% off all dermal fillers during October and November this year. Prices before discount start at £195.
Our staff are knowledgeable about procedures so don’t hesitate to ask them advice.
Recent research has been focusing on the link between gum disease, heart disease and strokes. Simply put, people who suffer from gum disease are a lot more likely to have heart disease and strokes. There are several theories to explain this link.
One theory is that oral bacteria (the bugs found in our mouths) can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the heart blood vessels and contributing to clot formation. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow and restrict the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly. This can lead to a heart attack.
Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by gum disease increases plaque build up which may contribute to swelling of the arteries.
Either way, researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without gum disease.
Another study has shown that people who suffer from acute cerebrovascular ischaemia (a stroke) were more likely to have an oral infection when compared to those in a control group.
So what can be done about gum disease (or periodontal disease- it’s correct name)?
Hari and Judith are trained to detect gum disease when you attend for your routine dental appointments. We ‘probe’ around your teeth and gums and take X-rays from time to time to ensure that we diagnose gum disease when it is present and often before it takes hold. We look for bone loss, inflamed gums and plaque left on teeth after you have brushed. Good oral hygiene is key to preventing gum disease.
Good oral hygiene includes;

  • Brushing for 2-3 minutes twice a day
  • Using a good electric toothbrush if possible- we can give you further advice on this
  • Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride
  • Flossing or interdental cleaning once a day
  • Not smoking
  • Seeing your dentist at least once every 2 years or more frequently if recommended.

We often carry out scales and polishes and root planning for more problematic areas. From time to time if your gums are unhealthy we will recommend a mouthwash such as Corsodyl. If your gum disease is more advanced we recommend a referral to a specialist periodontist (gum disease specialist).
In other news, we have now got our website up and running. Please have a look- we really appreciate any feedback you have on it. The web address is http://www.eachwaydentalpractice.co.uk .
Please, also look for us and ‘like’ us on facebook and twitter. That way we can notify you of any up and coming events and special offers.
Our open night last March was really enjoyable. Thank you for your support. We really appreciate you coming along to meet us and have a chat. Thanks to Pam and Tracy for coming to do complimentary massages and beauty treatments, Karen and Gary for their jewellery and also thanks to the dental companies who contributed lots of samples to give you in your goodie bags. Feedback from the wrinkle relaxing demonstration (botox) was really good.
Keep an eye on our facebook page or express an interest when you see us, so that you can book a place at our next open night in early spring.
Remember we are YOUR dental practice and YOUR dentist and we really value your feedback. Please share us with your family and friends. We take your referrals as a great personal compliment and an affirmation that you feel secure and comfortable with our team. We also know that this means you have entrusted us with the care of your family, friends and colleagues.
Yours in Good Dental Health,

Hari, Judith and The Team
